David Carradine was well-known as an actor, having gained fame in the popular TV series Kung Fu, as well as having appeared in many major Hollywood productions as well as low-budget B-movies. However, Carradine often stated that the reason he took on so many roles as an actor was to secure finances for projects of his own design. One of those projects was Americana.

In addition to Americana, Carradine directed three episodes of the Kung Fu while he was starring in the series as well as a film called You and Me, which was released in 1975. Americana was meant to be the film that would put him on the map and gain him respect and validation as a serious filmmaker. Unfortunately, due to a lot of negative press regarding the film when it was released, it was poorly received and not successful. Before long, Americana was all but forgotten, and Carradine would never direct another film, though he continued his prolific acting career until his untimely death in 2009.
